Every great venture starts with a little bit of necessity, a lot of love, and a total refusal to settle for second best. For Cracked and Ashy Tallow Co., the spark was struck right at our kitchen counter here in Sheridan, Indiana. My wife, Cynthia, was on a relentless hunt for a simple peppermint and eucalyptus lip balm. She didn’t want a tube packed with synthetic petroleum, chemical fillers, or artificial fragrances that left her skin drier than before she put it on, she just wanted something pure, deeply moisturizing, and crisp that actually worked. She finally found a commercial one online that she thought she might actually like, but when it arrived, the plastic twist mechanism on the stick was completely broken and it wouldn't move up or down. After watching her search high and low only to end up with a broken plastic tube, I figured it was time to stop looking, ditch the cheap plastic sticks entirely, and start crafting.

I went out, sourced the highest-quality natural ingredients I could find, including deeply nourishing, grass-fed beef tallow, and got to work. I blended, experimented, and poured a custom, small-batch five-gram jar made specifically for her. Cynthia tried it, absolutely loved it, and immediately told me I couldn't stop there. That single, successful batch of what would become our signature Crack Filler pocket balm opened our eyes to a much bigger problem. We realized that if the big-name stores couldn’t deliver a clean, honest product in a reliable package for a simple lip balm, the everyday lotions people were slathering on their skin were likely just as compromised.

We decided our skin didn't need a lab-born chemistry experiment, it needed the time-tested, nutrient-dense fuel found in nature. Taking that exact same philosophy of pure, rugged craftsmanship, we expanded from that first lip balm jar into a full line of heavy-duty whipped creams, intense moisturizing lotions, and natural body goods. Today, every jar of Ash Kicker, Sandpaper Symphony, and Lung Butter is made with the same care as that very first batch. What started as a husband trying to fix a broken stick and make the perfect balm for his wife has grown into a family mission to give your skin the honest, deep hydration it deserves.
